Marine Atlantic is currently looking for a Compensation & Benefits Specialist to work with our Human Resources department, located in North Sydney, NS.

The Human Resources (HR) Division is responsible for developing and implementing strategies that align with Marine Atlantic’s vision and foster strong employee engagement in all areas of strategic human resource management including talent management, equity, diversity and inclusion, leadership development, labour relations, total compensation, workforce and succession planning, staff scheduling and employee health and wellness. It ensures programs and policies are in place to support all aspects of the employee life cycle, from recruitment and onboarding to performance management, training, and development.

 

Reporting to the Senior Pension and Benefits Lead, the Compensation & Benefits Specialist is responsible for the administration of the Pension, Health & Dental, Life Insurance, Short- & Long-term Disability, and other applicable employee benefits. Maintenance of the enterprise resource planning system and related interfaces and databases is also covered by this position. As with all positions within the HR department, the position deals with confidential employee information and must always be respectful of employee privacy.

 

Additional Key Areas of Responsibility

•    Maintains and updates employee records in the company’s enterprise resource planning system. Monitors data in the enterprise resource planning system and maintains pertinent system tables. Audits data entry on a regular basis.
•    Maintains employee benefit enrollments for the Benefit Module within the enterprise resource planning system, including maintenance of manager reporting relationships in the system, maintenance of return of service agreement and contract end date information.
•    Meets with new employees either one on one or in a group to assist with the completion of new hire packages, explains all group benefits, and answers any questions.
•    Processes terminations in the enterprise resource planning system.
•    Maintains the computerized travel pass system and creates travel cards.
•    Leads the Employee Recognition Committee, organizes meetings as required to plan Employee Recognition functions.
•    Processes monthly retirements in conjunction with the Company pension plan administrator. Coordinates nomination process for the Pensioner Board representative. Serves as Secretary to Pension Board attending regular meetings and preparation of the minutes. Coordinates and presents at Pre-Retirement Seminars.
•    Processes employees buy backs and pension deficiency payments, co-ordinates the “Alive and Well process” for pensioners in conjunction with the Company Pension Plan, handles monthly interfaces for pensions and balances with service provider, liaises with pension provider and employees on pension credit splits.
•    Maintains the Unifor health subsidy. This involves determining employee subsidy eligibility, processing monthly billing, balancing funds wired to the Trustee and Custodian against pensioners paid the subsidy each month and reconciling any discrepancies.
•    Additional responsibilities include filing of all pertinent documentation on employee files, assisting with office mail outs, and other duties as assigned.
•    Promotes a safe working environment.

 

Qualifications:
•    Post Secondary Education (University Degree or College Diploma)
•    Two years of work experience that demonstrates you have a passion for providing support to customers and/or employees.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience (Asset):
•    Knowledge and use of computer based human resources information systems.
•    Experience with group employee benefits, pension plans, insurance contracts, and policies.
•    Knowledge of report writer computer software.
•    Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) and/or Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) Designation.
